Window Screen Mesh Options in Tampa Bay

The mesh decides most of what a window screen is like to live with: how much air comes through, how clear the view is, and whether the dog, the sun or the tiny bugs get past it. We fit four kinds of window screen mesh, and each window can have its own. Here is what each one is for, so you can choose before we come out.

Window screen mesh types, side by side

  • Standard fiberglass: the best airflow and the clearest view. Right for most windows.
  • Pet-resistant: a heavy duty window screen mesh that stands up to claws and paws. For windows and doors a dog or cat can reach.
  • No-see-um: a tighter weave that keeps out the tiny biting bugs common near the water. Slightly less airflow.
  • Solar: a denser mesh that blocks much of the sun's heat and glare. A darker view out.

Every one of them goes into the same aluminum frame, so the choice is only about the window and what it faces.

Fiberglass window screen mesh

Standard fiberglass is the mesh most window screens come with, and for most windows it is the right choice. It lets the most air through, gives the clearest view out, and keeps out mosquitoes, flies and other insects. It does not rust or dent, which matters on homes near salt water.

Pet proof window screens

A dog that leans on a screen, or a cat that climbs one, goes through standard fiberglass mesh sooner or later, and often more than once. Pet-resistant mesh is a thicker, vinyl-coated polyester made to take claws and pushing that would tear standard mesh. It is the heavy duty window screen mesh for homes with pets.

It costs more than standard mesh and is a little less see-through, so most homes only need it where the pets are: the sliding screen door, and the low windows a dog can reach or a cat sits in. We do pet screen installation on window screens and sliding screen doors, at your home.

No-see-um window screen mesh

No-see-ums are small enough to get through standard mesh. No-see-um mesh is woven tighter, with openings too small for most of them, and looks much like standard mesh from inside. The trade-off is a little less airflow.

It makes the most sense on the windows that face the water and the ones you keep open in the evening. The screen also has to fit: a tight weave in a bent frame still leaves a gap.

Solar window screens

Solar mesh is a denser weave that blocks much of the sun's heat and glare before it reaches the glass. On windows that take the afternoon sun, it keeps the room cooler and cuts the glare on screens and floors.

There is a trade-off: the view out is darker, and the room gets a little less daylight. During the day it is harder to see in from outside, which many people like. At night, with the lights on inside, that reverses. Most homes put solar window screens only on the windows that face the sun, and standard mesh on the rest.

The best window screen material for your home

There is no single best window screen material. The best one is the one that matches the window:

  • A window you open for the breeze or the view: standard fiberglass
  • A window or door a dog or cat can reach: pet-resistant
  • A window near the water, open at dusk: no-see-um
  • A window that takes strong sun: solar

Most homes end up with two or three kinds. Tell us which windows face the sun, the water or the pets, and we will suggest a mix. You can send photos with your quote request.

Mesh for sliding screen doors

The sliding screen door takes more wear than any window screen, and it is where pets do the most damage. Pet-resistant mesh is the most common upgrade on a sliding screen door.

New mesh in a sliding screen door is part of our sliding screen door repair, so the rollers and track can be done in the same visit.

Window screen mesh questions

Is there a cat proof window screen?

No mesh is completely cat proof, but pet-resistant mesh comes close. It is thick enough that claws do not go through it the way they go through standard mesh, and it holds up to a cat climbing it or a dog pushing on it. We fit it on window screens and sliding screen doors.

Can I have different mesh on different windows?

Yes, and most homes do. No-see-um mesh on the windows facing the water, solar on the ones that take the afternoon sun, pet-resistant where the pets are, and standard fiberglass everywhere else.

Do solar window screens make the room darker?

A little. Solar mesh is denser, so less daylight comes through and the view out is darker. In exchange the room stays cooler and has less glare. That is why most people only put it on the windows that face the sun. Our post on whether window screens block heat compares solar and standard mesh in more detail.

Can you put new mesh in my existing window screens?

Yes. If the frame is still straight, the old mesh comes out and the new mesh goes in, whichever kind you choose. That is window rescreening, and we do it at your home.

Does no-see-um mesh cut down the airflow?

Slightly. The weave is tighter, so a little less air gets through, and most people do not notice it with the window open. Our guide to keeping no-see-ums out of your house explains where else they get in.
